GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax, launched on 1 July 2017. It replaced a maze of earlier taxes like VAT, service tax and excise duty. GST is charged at every stage of the supply chain, but businesses claim credit for the tax they paid on inputs — so the final consumer effectively bears the tax.
| Slab | Common examples |

| 5% | Packaged food, economy rail tickets, small restaurants |

| 28% | Luxury cars, tobacco, aerated drinks |
CGST and SGST apply to sales within a state (split 50/50 between Centre and State). IGST applies to inter-state sales and imports, collected entirely by the Centre.

GST is charged on the transaction value — the actual price paid after discounts, not the printed MRP.
